The Purls knit prayer shawls and chemo caps for patients at both Norwalk and Stamford Hospitals, and for family and friends of St. Michael's members who are facing significant surgery, chemotherapy or a challenging time in their life. While most knitters work at home, group knitting sessions are held several times a year. At the end of each meeting, the group prays over completed shawls, in the hope that they will provide comfort and peace to those who receive them. Everyone is welcome — whether you are an experienced knitter or not!
The quilters assemble donated fabric and transform them into quilts that are sent all over the world where there is need. The quilters meet for quilting and chit-chat once a week on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 a.m.
St. Michael's members generously donate food, time and financial resources to programs that offer support to those in the community who need them. During the Christmas season, we support Person-to-Person with a “Dove Tree.” Paper ornament “doves” hanging from a Christmas tree are taken by congregation members, who volunteer to either purchase groceries to supply a Christmas Day meal for a family in need, or make a financial donation to help a family in need. We collect donations for the local food bank throughout the entire year, and have a little fun on Super Bowl Sunday with the “Souper Bowl” of Caring, where we encourage members to bring canned food donations to put in one of two boxes labeled with the Super Bowl rivals names. We also volunteer for various local groups that provide for outreach to those in need within the community, such as Meals on Wheels and Interfaith Council of New Canaan.
